Action Guide for Common Emergencies

Taking the correct steps immediately after an injury or complication can significantly improve your treatment outcome.

1. Severe Bleeding Post-Surgery

  • Keep your head elevated at a 45-degree angle.
  • Place a fresh, damp gauze pad (or a damp black tea bag) directly over the surgical site.
  • Bite down firmly and continuously for 30 to 45 minutes. Avoid checking the site frequently, as this disrupts clot formation.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or drinking through a straw, as suction can dislodge the blood clot.

2. Dry Socket (Severe Post-Op Pain)

  • If you experience a sudden, throbbing pain radiating toward your ear 3–5 days after an extraction, you may have dry socket.
  • Do not apply aspirin or rubbing alcohol directly to the gums.
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
  • Call our office immediately. We will arrange a quick visit to gently flush the socket and apply a soothing medicated dressing for instant relief.

3. Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Handle the tooth only by the crown (the chewing surface), never the sensitive root.
  • If dirty, rinse the tooth gently with milk or water. Do not scrub or remove any attached tissue fragments.
  • If possible, gently insert the tooth back into its socket and bite down lightly on gauze.
  • If it cannot be reinserted, store it in a container of cold whole milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation solution.
  • Call us or seek care within 60 minutes for the highest chance of saving the tooth.

4. Facial Trauma or Fractured Jaw

  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the face to minimize severe swelling.
  • Gently hold the jaw in place with a bandage or towel wrapped under the chin and tied over the head if you suspect a fracture.
  • Do not attempt to align or move the bones.
  • Call our trauma team or proceed immediately to the hospital ER, where our on-call oral surgeons coordinate major reconstructive care.
